A life-threatening condition due to a severe worsening of previously undiagnosed or inadequately treated thyrotoxicosis.

OBS

It often follows infections, childbirth, nonthyroid surgery, or trauma and presents as fever, severe agitation, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pains, an accelerated heart rate, and irregularity of the heart rhythm.

Crise suraigüe très grave [qui survient] parfois au cours de la maladie de Basedow, à l'occasion d'une intervention chirurgicale ou d'une infection ou encore après une thyroïdectomie mal préparée[. La crise est] caractérisée par une exagération de tous les signes de la thyréotoxicose : anxiété et agitation extrêmes, tachycardie et tremblement, [...] vomissements, [...] fièvre qui s'élève rapidement à 40 °C ou plus, puis [...] adynamie qui, en l'absence de traitement, aboutit rapidement à la cachexie, au coma et à la mort.
